Repetitive strain injuries (RSI) are some of the most common injuries we see, both in athletes and in people with physically demanding jobs or repetitive daily routines. These develop gradually, as the same movement places repeated stress on the same muscles, tendons, or nerves until pain or stiffness starts getting your attention.

Unlike a sprain or another injury caused by a single event, an RSI develops over time. It can come from repeated swings in sports like tennis, baseball, or golf, but also from everyday activities like typing, using a mouse, or manual work.

The sooner you recognize the symptoms of RSI, the easier it is to address the underlying cause.

What is Repetitive Strain Injury?

A repetitive strain injury is an overuse injury that develops when the same movement places repeated stress on a specific area of the body. That can be the wrist, elbow, shoulder, knee, or neck

An RSI develops from repeating the same movement so often that the muscles, tendons, or nerves don’t have enough time to recover. Every repetition places a small amount of stress on the tissue. Normally, your body repairs that tissue and adapts. But when the workload keeps coming, recovery can’t keep up.

Over time, that repeated stress begins to irritate the affected tissue. You may first notice stiffness after activity, soreness that lingers longer than usual, or tingling and weakness during certain movements. Left unchecked, those symptoms can become persistent and start interfering with everyday activities or sports performance.

The issue isn’t a single movement. RSI develops from the accumulation of thousands of repetitions over days, weeks, or even months.

The good news is that understanding the causes of RSI also makes it easier to treat and prevent. First, though, let’s look at the different conditions that fall under this umbrella.

Types of RSI

Tennis Elbow

Also known as lateral epicondylitis, tennis elbow develops when repetitive gripping, lifting, or swinging overloads the tendons on the outside of the elbow. It’s common in racquet sports, baseball, and even manual labor. Poor swing mechanics, the wrong grip size, or equipment that’s too heavy can all increase the stress on those tendons.

Golfers Elbow

While tennis elbow affects the outside of the joint, golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) targets the tendons on the inside of the elbow. Repetitive gripping and wrist movements are usually the culprit, making this injury common in golf, baseball, weightlifting, and other sports that heavily use the forearm.

Shin Splints

Also called medial tibial stress syndrome, shin splints cause pain along the inside of the shinbone. They’re especially common in runners and athletes who increase their training volume too quickly. Repeated impact from running and jumping overloads the tissues around the tibia, causing soreness that often worsens during activity.

Jumper’s Knee

Also known as patellar tendonitis, jumper’s knee develops when the tendon below the kneecap is repeatedly overloaded. Sports like basketball, volleyball, and track and field place high demands on this tendon through frequent jumping, sprinting, and landing. Pain usually develops just below the kneecap and can make explosive movements uncomfortable. 

Bursitis

Bursitis happens when a bursa—the small fluid-filled sac that cushions a joint—becomes irritated from repeated pressure or friction. It’s common around the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee, especially in activities that involve kneeling, overhead work, or leaning on the joints for long periods. Symptoms typically include tenderness, swelling, and pain during movement. 

Carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome develops when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the wrist. Repetitive hand and wrist movements, such as typing, using a mouse, or working with tools, can contribute to the problem. Common symptoms include tingling, numbness, weakness, and reduced grip strength. 

Tendonitis

Tendonitis is the irritation of a tendon caused by repeated loading or sudden increases in activity. It can affect almost any tendon in the body, including the shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, and ankle. Pain usually becomes more noticeable during movement and may limit strength and range of motion if left untreated.

Causes of RSI

Repetitive strain injuries can be tricky, as they don’t usually appear overnight. The movement that eventually causes pain often feels perfectly fine at first. Then, after days, weeks, or even months of repeating it, the symptoms begin to show up.

The most common causes of RSI include:

  • Repetitive sports movements: Swinging a golf club, serving in tennis, pitching a baseball, swimming laps, or jumping repeatedly all place consistent stress on the same muscles and tendons. Without proper technique, recovery, and load management, that stress can build into an overuse injury.
  • Work and daily habits: Typing, using a mouse, scrolling on a smartphone, gaming, or spending hours in the same posture can overload the wrists, hands, neck, and shoulders over time.
  • Poor workstation ergonomics: An improperly adjusted desk, chair, keyboard, or monitor can increase stress on your muscles and joints throughout the workday. That’s one reason conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome and chronic neck pain are so common among office workers.
  • Manual labor and repetitive tasks: Jobs or hobbies that involve hammering, lifting, carrying, painting, gardening, or using hand tools repeatedly can also overload the same tissues day after day.

The more often you repeat the same movement, the more important recovery becomes. Giving your muscles, tendons, and nerves time to adapt helps keep them healthy and resilient, while constant overload can eventually lead to RSI symptoms. 

Symptoms of RSI

At first, RSI symptoms may only appear after activity. As the tissue becomes more irritated, they can start showing up during movement or even at rest.

Here are the most common signs of an RSI:

  • Stiffness and tingling: These are often the first symptoms people notice. Your muscles or joints may feel tight after repetitive activity, while tingling can signal that a nerve is beginning to feel the effects of repeated stress.
  • Pain: Pain often starts during or after the activity that’s causing the overload. Over time, it may last longer, become more noticeable, and begin affecting everyday movements.
  • Swelling and weakness: As the tissue becomes more irritated, you may notice tenderness, mild swelling, or reduced strength.
  • Numbness or burning: When a nerve is involved, symptoms can include numbness, pins and needles, or a burning sensation.
  • Reduced mobility: Ongoing irritation can make the affected area feel stiff and restricted. You may notice it’s harder to reach overhead, fully straighten your elbow, bend your knee, or perform movements that once felt effortless.

The earlier you recognize these symptoms, the easier it is to identify the source of the problem and begin the right RSI treatment. Early care also helps prevent the injury from progressing into a longer recovery that keeps you away from the activities you enjoy.

Repetitive strain injuries are preventable, but they require a proactive approach. The goal is to keep doing the activities you enjoy or depend on while helping your body adapt to repetitive movements. 

Here are a few ways to reduce your risk of developing an RSI:

  • Improve your technique: Whether you’re swinging a racket, lifting boxes, or typing all day, small adjustments to your movement or equipment can reduce unnecessary stress on your muscles and tendons.
  • Optimize your workspace: Adjust your chair, desk, monitor, and keyboard so your body stays in a comfortable position throughout the day. Even small office ergonomic changes can make a big difference over time.
  • Take regular movement breaks: If your work or hobbies involve repeating the same movement, change positions, stretch, or walk around for a few minutes throughout the day to give your muscles and joints a break.
  • Manage your training load: Athletes benefit from varying training intensity, balancing different movement patterns, and allowing enough recovery between hard sessions. A well-designed training plan helps reduce the risk of overuse injuries.
  • Warm up and recover well: A proper warm-up prepares your muscles and joints for activity, while mobility work, stretching, and recovery afterward help your body adapt to the demands of repetitive movement.
